HOW FLUENT IS YOUR ENGLISH ???

HOW FLUENT IS YOUR ENGLISH?

Are you learning to speak in English or practicing to become fluent at it? Then this is relevant to you.

Most of individuals are often confused about evaluating their state of fluency in spoken English. Through my experience, I have noted some obvious indications that confirm your current stage of fluency of the language.
It’s clearly embarrassing to fizzle out in from of others in spite of being confident about the subject but unable to speak on it confidently. Colleagues, seniors, peers making fun of us. This is applicable for the modern individual of any age, gender or profession. We al want to sound confident and know a second language where necessary. Many documentations and procedures are carried out in English. Employers prefer to hire someone with good communication skills and a good command over English language. Today, the Globalisation has made it so important for all of us to know this language for various purposes, like doing business with English speaking nations, travelling etc. It is so deep rooted by now that it is almost impossible to image life without the use of English language
I also agree that it’s not a must but a good to know to English as a language. One should always be proud of native language but at the same time we need to be practical and cannot turn a blind eye on the importance of English as a language around us in our day to lives

Below are top 10 indicators and if you feel you have experienced 4 or more of them, then you are almost there.

TOP 10 INDICATORS

  • 1.      You find it lesser and lesser difficult in using new words in your day today life.
  • 2.      You are able to give directions in English to others without much difficulty.
  • 3.      You are able to understand and participate in humor/jokes in English. E.g. watching a comedy show and understanding all of the jokes with ease.
  • 4.      You are able to place an order over a phone with ease.
  • 5.      You sometimes have dream in English
  • 6.      You start framing sentences in English itself (and not in your native language and then translating it in English)
  • 7.      You natural response to any question posed at you is in English rather than your native language.
  • 8.      You are able to watch content in English without subtitles (English Movies, News etc.)
  • 9.      You immediately realize a mistake as soon as you make it while speaking and try to rectify the same; yes you are on your way to becoming more fluent.
  • 10.  Last but not the least, You are able to understand and given bad words in English (this may sound funny and offensive but trust me, one is not completely considered to be fluent until you have mastered this art)

Bonus – You are able to use proverbs, quotes more often with much more ease.

TOP 5 HABITS TO IMPROVE YOUR SPOKEN ENGLISH

Although, many people know English and even able to understand simple spoken English ever wonder why they are unable to speak fluently?  Most of them have their formal education done in that language or many have even invested heaps money in private English coaching classes.

The answer is brutally straight forward, “Lack of Practice”. Yes, often, learners of new Language hardly practice or not enough. Their immediate surroundings do not provide them the opportunity to do so even if they are willing to speak/practice in English.
Their family members, peers, teachers, friends and colleagues, all speak in their native languages. At one stage they finally lose their confidence to a level where they are afraid of making mistakes quite naturally as they do not wish to become a laughing stock in front of others. As a result, they completely stop trying. They limit their answers to bare “Yes” and “No”. They daily habits and actions are almost zero that are clearly not in the direction that leads to learning a new language with ease. These rules are in fact applicable to learning any language and not limited to learning English alone.
In my experience and others who have actually become fluent over the time have formed the habits listed below. They are more; however, these are the bare minimum.

TOP 5 habits to improve fluency in spoken English.
(Given that the student knows Basic English)

1.       FIND A GURU OR A MENTOR: First and foremost, identify a Guru/Mentor/Guide who is good at English and is willing to help you learn this language. Somebody who already has a good command over English and is extremely patient, empathetic and someone who can discipline you. If not find a good professional coach/teacher with all or some of the qualities of that of a Guru/Mentor.

2.       READING HABIT:  The subjects must gradually build up the habit of reading on daily basis. To begin with they can start with a thin book, be it any topic, doesn’t matter. The advantage of reading is that it helps the students to understand various forms of sentence constructions, grammar, punctuation, spellings and build their vocabulary. Initially it will be difficult but as one gets the hang of it becomes simpler. One needs to make note of sentence formation. Use of grammar and learn new words along with appropriate pronunciation (using dictionary). Beginner must try reading aloud for better retention and grasp. Daily at least 500 words to begin with.
Try to translate any content that you read in your native or any other language to English. Ask for corrects from your guru and guidance.

3.       WRITING HABIT: Start writing articles, essays, daily etc. and seek help from people with good English. Make mistakes, ample of them and be open to feedback and try to learn from your mistake. Avoid making the same mistakes again. Gradually your mistakes will begin to reduce and your writing skills will improve. You can use pen and paper or types PC/Laptop. I would suggest that you use the former in the initial phase. Daily at least one page.

4.       WATCHING/LISTENING HABIT: Start watching or listening to content in English. My strong suggestion is watching BBC or any good news channels that use neutral English (no particular accent), watch English movies with subtitles (avoid watching with subtitles at later stages), comedy shows, documentaries, web series etc. whatever fancies you. Use a medium where it is possible to pause and replay the content.

5.       SPEAK UP:  Start talking, in brave and do not be ashamed of making mistakes. Imagine if as toddlers you and I would have given up on learning to walk because we fell down every time we tried to stand or walk. Would we be able to walk and run like we do today? It’s a fact that anybody who has mastered any kind of art or skills be it swimming, driving, skiing, archery and anything for that matter has only and only with enough practice. We also know people who gave up on learning skills only because of lack of patience or due to fear or phobia. Hence, it is imperative that we give always all inhibitions, hesitations and especially the fear of making mistakes. Make mistake, ample of them but with the clear intention of learning from mistakes and avoiding the same mistake in the future. The more you practice, the more you will get better at it. Possibility, it is the only way to great learning.
